Nikon D7100 Announced

Today Nikon announced the Nikon D7100, a 24MP DX DSLR, coming in to replace the 16MP D7000. The camera will retail for $1229 CND, body only or $1549 CDN with the 18-105mm F3.5-5.6G VR lens. This is a basic update, with more megapixels and some shifts in button placement, nothing special has been added over the older D7000.

This revision brings the D7xxx line up to-date with the latest features that appeared in the Nikon D4 last year. The camera still features a 100% optical viewfinder, but with a new OLED screen to display shooting information. The movie recording button is moved to the top, and the LV button is updated to match the D4, D800(E) and D600. The camera receives the higher end 51 point AF system, 15 of which are cross type, and the center point works with lenses with a maximum aperture of F8. This enables the use of the TC20E III on an F4 lens, like the AF-S 300mm F4D IF-ED or AF-S 200-400mm VR.

The D7100 maintains the mid-range build quality of the D7000, with the top and rear parts of the frame being magnesium alloy. The rest of the frame is made with high quality plastic. This design matches the D7000 and D600. This design leaves a weak point in the body, the lens mount, which is still into plastic. The D7100 is said to have improved weather seals, to match the D300s. Like the D7000 before it, the D7100 shutter is designed to last for around 150,000 shots. The camera also features a new "Spot White Balance" function, which only works in Liveview. Otherwise, what's old is new.
